Raise the Bar is an exciting new program designed to improve the quality of intramural/house league programs in elementary and secondary schools across Ontario. Supported by the Ministry of Health Promotion, Raise the Bar will provide schools with resources and assistance in the development of these programs.

The phrase 'raise the bar' is an expression used to convey the idea of gradually setting the accepted minimum standard higher in order to reach an objective of excellence. The objective behind Raise the Bar is to set the minimum standard higher in health and physical education and athletic programs by offering more inclusive physical activity and sport programs. The objective of excellence will be reached when we offer programs that every student can participate in.

Since 2006 Raise the Bar has been the leading voice in advocating intramurals in schools across Ontario. Conducting meetings, workshops and student leadership conferences, Raise the Bar has been meeting the needs of students and teachers with an emphasis on inclusion and effective student leadership models.

When implemented effectively, intramural programs can significantly increase the number of students who become involved in physical activities and therefore more engaged in the school. With the growing concern over childhood obesity, intramurals offer additional opportunities for our kids to be active and healthy.

“Intramurals allowed me and my friends to get on a team right away in grade 9”, says Andy Kubinec, a grade 12 student at St. James CHS in Guelph. “In fact, we’ve had the same intramural team for four years.”

The benefits of intramurals are numerous, ranging from increasing the physical activity level of our kids to improving their sense of self esteem and self worth. Quality intramural programs can also help schools develop a more positive, safe and dynamic school environment.

At a time when childhood/teen obesity is at an all - time high, we need to engage students more than ever in our physical activity programs.

It is our hope that you will make full use of this web site which offers several links containing information on how to maximize the quality of your intramural program.

As of September 2009, Raise the Bar has expanded its' mandate to include injury prevention, tobacco, and sex education.
