Intramurals

Description of Intramural/Recreation Program:
The St. Francis Lancer House League program is designed to promote a positive attitude, positive behaviour, and a sense of community within the school. Each student, teacher and auxiliary staff member is assigned to one of the four house league coloured teams and given a T-shirt of that colour. These shirts are worn at house league games, assemblies, community events and some athletic events (e.g. cross country). The students collect points throughout the year by making good choices, showing respect, being a good leader, sharing, showing kindness, completing schoolwork, attendance at school, being part of a school team or club, etc. Students in Grade 5 to 8 play their intramural games at lunch from 12:10 p.m. to 12:45 p.m., and Grades 1 to 4 play at afternoon recess. The games are scored, timed and refereed by senior students. Intramural sports played are volleyball, handball, basketball, baseball, chess and checkers, and badminton. All games are coed and grade level appropriate (Gr. 1 & Gr. 2 play together, Gr. 3 & Gr. 4 play together, etc.) House league games are played Monday through Thursday with Friday as a makeup day of games missed during the week.

Highlight of Your Program:
The house league program is kicked off in September with a huge pep rally style assembly with guest speakers to motivate the students and for the choosing your house team colour. Points are tabulated each month from the each classroom, student of the month awards, house league games, etc. and the team with the most house points at the end of the year will win the LANCER CUP (similar looking to the Stanley Cup). The winning team members all come forward as a team to get a chance to hold and raise the cup. Also, each member gets to drink from the cup (ginger ale) and gets their name engraved on the cup to stay in the trophy case for all to see.

What do You Think Makes Your Program Unique:
The emphasis that we place on the students is sportsmanship and teamwork. There have been many occasions when the winning team in a house league game is not the team who scored the most points, but rather the team that showed the most spirit, team play and sportsmanship in the game. We also assign points for attendance and for wearing your team coloured shirt. We have playoff and championships for each sport and in the championship game all classes that participate in the division are invited to watch the final game. The two finalist teams are introduced and we all sing “O Canada” together before the game begins.

Participation Statistics:
At the lunch hour games spectators are invited. We have about 80% participation in the games, but with spectators we have 90% of all the students who stay for lunch at school. In the afternoon recess, we again have spectators and we have 95% participation with 100% of all Gr. 1 to 4 students in the gym either playing or watching.

Description of the Leadership Role(s) Students Play in the Program:
This program is a new initiative at this school this year and so we are setting many of the foundations this year. Some of the leadership roles that students play are scoring, timing and refereeing (Primary/ Junior games only) and writing and reading announcement reports for the PA for the next day. We have developed a leadership program with the Grade 5/6 class to have leaders in the school for several years to promote the program and expectations necessary to help the program grow each year. This program is called LEAD (Love, Educate, Accept and Dedicate) the message that we discuss each week with the students is how they can LEAD others in the school. Creating posters, creating power point presentations with positive messages, organizing activities for the whole student body and leading assemblies with dance routines, songs and readings are some of the activities that this LEAD group does in the school. This class is taken on a leadership experience at the ROPES course to develop trust, team play, cooperation and commitment.
