Super Teams

Do you want to make your intramural program more exciting and attractive to students?

Are you having difficulties getting students involved in intramurals?

Are you just getting the athletes?

Do you have to compete with malls and fast food restaurants during lunch?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you need to know more about SUPER TEAMS.

Getting more students involved year–round is the philosophy behind the Super Team program. The Super Team program is an exciting part of the overall intramural program.

Students are encouraged to participate in intramurals for the entire school year with the same team that they signed up with in September. This year–round commitment and participation creates a great deal of interest in the program.

Once teams have established their commitment to the program – excellent attendance and attitude for the first activity, indoor soccer, floor hockey or whatever activity you have – they are deemed to be Super Teams. What does this mean?

Super Team participants design their own team t-shirt with their own logo and have their names on the back of the shirt. Students have a great deal of fun with this. Students pay a small fee for their shirt – $4.00, which helps offset the cost of the t-shirt. The rest of the money comes from the school athletic budget or from the athletic council/sports association budget. The intramural program is a key component of the school athletic program and should receive financial support similar to the football or basketball teams.

A deadline is set for the return of the Super Team Application forms – usually 1 week – and then these forms are sent away to a local t-shirt printing company.

It is important that the staff advisor monitor the designs and logos of the team shirts to ensure that they are appropriate. Students should complete a Super Team Registration Form to provide all necessary information – see example (PDF file will open).

Super Teams create a great deal of interest in the intramural program. It creates a healthy level of competition between Super Teams of the same divisions. Schools that have Super Team programs report that students in grade 9 are on the same team in grade 12. Most importantly, Super Teams create excitement for the intramural program. This excitement can draw students away from the malls and in addition, targets many of the 'non-athletes' in the school.

Super Teams allow students participating in intramurals to view themselves as no different from the students playing on a varsity school team. They have a team, uniform and are playing a competitive and fun schedule.

As educators we know the value of being involved and the importance of being on a team.

Why can’t every student play on a team and have their own team jersey?

This is a Senior Boys Division team just finishing a game of European Handball. Their Super Team name is 'Relentless'. These boys have been an intramural Super Team since grade 9.

This is a grade 11 boys Super Team called the BagofNachos. These boys have been together since grade 9.

The Pink Panthers are all in grade 11 now. They started their team in grade 9.

This is another senior girls division Super Team called 'It's Over!'. This team is a collection of girls who play varsity athletics, are members of the athletic council, and those that just play intramurals.

These ladies (below) are members of the St. James female Super Team called The Old Schoolers.
